Nothing is worse than doing your taxes than having to pay to get them done — especially when money is tight. Once again, the United Way has come through to offer their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. This program provides free tax-preparation service to individuals and households with incomes less than $64,000/yr from January 18-April 18. There are 19 VITA sites, located throughout Palm Beach County, each staffed with fully trained and certified volunteers.
Free help filing your income tax return
There are 3 options for you to choose from:
Get your taxes filed for you. Free tax preparation services are offered at several county-wide sites.
File your income tax return with help (FSA). Visit select sites and receive assistance from qualified volunteers filling out the form.
You also have the option to file your taxes yourself. Visit MyFreeTaxes.com.
What to Do
- Gather the required forms.
- Find the nearest VITA location online or call 800-906-9887. Note that if you are planning to file your taxes online through the web-based program, the location must list Self-Help in the listing.
- Visit a VITA location. Many of the locations offer walk-in visits, while other require an appointment. Also, the hours do vary so check on the specifics when viewing the listings.
Other Options for Free Income Tax Assistance
In addition to VITA, Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) or AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free help for all taxpayers year-round, especially the elderly. This service specializes in questions about finances, unique to seniors — and counseling is offered by certified volunteers. Find a Tax-Aide location near you and remember the required forms.
