Nothing is worse than doing your income tax return than having to pay to get them done — especially when money is tight. Once again, the United Way has come through to offer their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. This program provides free tax-preparation service to individuals and households with incomes less than $66,000/yr through April 15. There are 16 VITA sites, located throughout Palm Beach County, each staffed with fully trained and certified volunteers.
Free help filing your income tax return
There are different options for you to choose from:
Get your taxes filed for you. Free tax preparation services are offered at several county-wide sites.
File your income tax return with help (FSA). Visit select sites and receive assistance from qualified volunteers filling out the form.
You also have the option to file your taxes yourself. Visit MyFreeTaxes.com.
What to Do
- Gather the required forms.
- Find the nearest VITA location online or call 800-906-9887.
- Visit a VITA location. Many of the locations offer walk-in visits, while other require an appointment. Also, the hours do vary so check on the specifics when viewing the listings.
Other Options for Free Income Tax Return Assistance
AARP also offers free tax preparation assistance through April 15. This program is targeted towards low- and moderate-income taxpayers 50 and above (though that is not a requirement, nor is it to be a requirement to be a member of AARP). You will need to bring some documents with you. To find a location near you, visit the Tax-Aide site.
Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE). If you’re 60+, there’s one federally funded assistance program led by IRS-certified volunteers — and are oftentimes operated by AARP’s Tax-Aide program. Visit the IRS to find a TCE facility near you or call 888-227-7669.
